Q. How does a racing kart differ from a rental kart?

A. The biggest difference is that the rental karts (amusements karts etc) are not designed for ‘hard out’ competition and as such usually have engines tuned for reliability rather than performance and speed. Rental karts run harder compound tyres, extra protective bars and bumpers and rollover bars and are therefore heavier than racing karts. Rental karts generally do not have sophisticated braking systems as racing karts do.

Racing karts are built specifically to be raced and use high performance racing engines, which are highly tuned and produce more power and thus speed. Racing karts, while incorporating sophisticated safety, do not have additional protective bars or rollover bars and are lighter and more performance oriented.

The experience gained in your karting years will prove invaluable once you are ready to move up the ranks of motorsport. For many, the nest step up from karting is an open-wheeled singles seater series such as Formula Ford, Formula Renault, F2000 or other similar series. These are very competitive classes and doing well here will hold you in good stead.
